Hello World, I'm Kyle
Greetings to all who may be reading this. Who am I, you ask? It's a profound question, and while I'll attempt to
simplify it, my mind brims with countless thoughts. My name is Kyle Pillay, which may seem common, but I'm
anything but. In my childhood, I was quite mischievous, and my memories are filled with frequent injuries. I was
always active and adventurous, which likely contributed to my fair share of scrapes, bruises, sprains, and
dislocations.
A short list of things I like to do
- Videogaming and watching anime
- Sprinting and long-distance running
- Skateboarding
- Parkour, and Chess
- Callisthenics
- Weight lifting and bouldering
- Mountain climbing
- Taekwondo and programming
- Appreciation of fine cuisine (with a soft spot for pizza)
I could share much more, but let's keep it terse. If you're curious to
know more about me, feel free to email me at kyle@whakatau.com. I
have a strong passion for video games and anime, which greatly
influence my lifestyle. I hold little tolerance for unkindness, a
sentiment rooted in my childhood experiences. While I often wrestle
with pessimism, I strive to be a benevolent and intelligent person. It's
been a journey from my early social struggles, but I've worked
diligently on my communication skills over the last five years,
thanks to a dear friend who guided me. Despite occasional anxiety, I
persevere in my quest for personal growth.
Where do I come from?
I currently reside in Hatfield, Pretoria, but I was born and raised
in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, where I lived for 26 years before
relocating to Kempton Park, Gauteng, in February 2023.
Durban, with its tranquil atmosphere and scorching climate, was my original
hometown. Growing up in Durban, I was part of a large family of
ten, though the number has since reduced to six members. Currently,
my family in Durban includes my mother, two sisters, my uncle, who
is like a father to me, and a cousin who is practically another
sister.
After a brief stay with my aunt in Kempton Park, I made my
way to Hatfield, Pretoria. Both
Durban and Kempton Park have their merits, but they are also known
for higher crime rates, making Hatfield's peaceful environment a
welcome change. The sense of safety it offers, where one doesn't
need to constantly watch their back at night, is a blessing few can
truly appreciate.
Why am I at Whakatau?
I've often grappled with self-doubt and faced setbacks while pursuing a variety of dreams, ranging from aspirations of becoming an Olympic sprinter to envisioning a career as the next Bruce Lee, aspiring to become a theoretical physicist, and even contemplating a path as a chemical engineer.
Throughout this diverse journey, one consistent passion has remained in my heart: my love for video games and computers, a path that my life had initially not embraced. Despite my educational background in Property Development, working as a cashier, and eventually transitioning into the role of a Rope Access Technician, these experiences have instilled in me a sense of humility and determination.
An unexpected opportunity at Whakatau as an intern software developer solidified my calling. My goal is to excel in this field and repay the kindness of Whakatau's founder, Sandra Van Dijk. As the saying goes, "In order for you to know true happiness, you must first experience anguish." My time at Whakatau has been a delightful journey, and I eagerly anticipate further growth as a coder. Thank you for getting to know me, and I'm excited to evolve in the years to come.
